The Doctrine of Demons is an account of the Christian belief in demons, a belief that is evident in the earliest records of the Christian religion and which continued without any significant disruption for more than eighteen hundred years. This ancient belief, reflected in the literature, architecture and folklore of Christian culture was rejected in the post-Enlightenment era by an increasingly secular Church, and is now treated therein as a ‘dead theological category’. Consequently, the spiritual realm is today an area of interest generally associated either with scholars, or with eccentrics populating the fringes of our society. The belief in Angels and Demons traditionally understood within the Church, is the subject of this book.
The Doctrine of Demons  is concerned specifically with demons and provides the reader with an insight into an area of spiritual life that has been neglected by the Church at large for many years. Edward Langton published The Doctrine of Demons in 1934 under the title Supernatural. It was the first of a series of books by this remarkable author, all of which are investigative in nature, exploring the doctrine of the good and evil spirits that filled the lives of the peoples of the ancient world. A more informed book will be hard to find.
More and more people today recognise that perspective, recognition, and acceptance of the spiritual dimension of human existence, is fundamental to a balanced understanding of this subject, thus Langton’s work will be appreciated more now than when is was first published almost almost a century ago. The author, Edward Langton (1886 – 1965), was one of the most enlightened authorities of his generation in this specialised area of research, and his books are an outstanding source of accurate information on the subject of both demonology and Angelology.
